2024 Conference Clinicians

  • Col. Don Schofield

    Colonel Don Schofield is the commander and conductor of The United States Air Force Band. He is responsible for all activities of this 184-member squadron, including equipping, training, and deploying Airmen musicians to perform nearly 1,600 missions each year. Schofield recently completed command with the United States Air Forces in Europe Band stationed at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, where he oversaw and directed more than 400 missions annually across Europe and Africa in a 104-nation area of responsibility

  • Joel Denton

    It Joel L. Denton served as Director of Bands at Ooltewah High School for thirty-seven years. Mr. Denton is a graduate of the University of Tennessee and has completed graduate studies at UT-Chattanooga. Mr. Denton currently serves as an adjunct instructor of Instrumental Music Education at Lee University. Prior to his retirement in 2018, he was recognized as a CMA Music Teacher of Excellence. At the 2015 Midwest Clinic, Mr. Denton was awarded the John Phillip Sousa Foundation Legion of Honor for his contributions to band.

  • Jennifer Leseth

    IJennifer is a Chicago native with 35-plus years of performance, instruction, and design experience in the pageantry arts.

    Her teaching and design experience includes serving as color guard caption head for Bluecoats, Crossmen, Madison Scouts, Carolina Crown, Phantom Regiment, and Santa Clara Vanguard. On a high school level, she has had the honor of leading the color guard programs at Marian Catholic, Plymouth Canton, Spring High School, Winston Churchill, LD Bell, Flower Mound, and Lincoln-Way Community School.

  • Rosie Queen

    Rosie Queen (Miller) has been active in the world of pageantry since 1983.

    For 16 years, she served as the director at Carmel H.S., where she built the program with an incredible team from 2003-2019. Carmel H.S. has won 5 WGI World Championships, 8 consecutive IHSCGA State Championships, and 5 BOA Grand National titles under her care. The program also grew from one with no winter guard program to one with 3 color guards and 100 eager students during Rosie’s direction.

  • Bobby Lambert

    Bobby is Director of Bands at Wando High School in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. From 2001-2013, Mr. Lambert was the assistant band director at Marian Catholic High School in Chicago Heights, Illinois where the marching band was a consistent finalist at the Bands of America Grand National Championships and a repeat winner of the 2A National Championship. At the state level, the band continued its winning streak as the Class Champion for the Illinois Marching Band Championship began in 1980.

    Since 1997, Mr. Lambert has directed student leadership camps around the country. In 2013, Mr. Lambert headed the inaugural Bands of America Drum Major Institute at Ball State University as part of the BOA Summer Symposium. Over 1000 high school students participate in various leadership programs with Mr. Lambert each summer. In 2017, he began the Charleston Band Director Institute which brings high school and middle school conductors to the campus of Wando to work with high school students as well as clinicians such as Greg Bimm on the art and craft of band direction.

    In addition to serving as a consultant with several programs across the country, Mr. Lambert has worked with the All-American Marching Band sponsored by the U.S. Army and the Bands of America Tournament of Roses Marching Band. He has also served as guest conductor for honor bands in several states including Texas, Ohio, Florida, Georgia, Virginia, and Illinois.

    The Bands of Wando have continued to thrive under the direction of Mr. Lambert and his fellow directors. Since his arrival in 2014, the marching band has won every state championship for which it has competed (2015, 17, and 19) and placed at BOA Grand Nationals each appearance (2014-7th, 2016-8th, 2018-6th).

  • Corey Christiansen

    Corey Christiansen is becoming recognized as one of the world’s preeminent guitarists and educators. A recording artist, writer, educator, and performer, he has played and taught in every situation around the globe for the last decade. He has played with Dr. Lonnie Smith, Vic Juris, Danny Gottlieb, Jeff Coffin, James Moody, Steve Houghton, Jeremy Allen and many, many other jazz greats.

    “Awakening,” Corey’s first CD as a leader, was the initial release on Mel Bay Records in 2004 and received critical acclaim throughout the jazz community. MB3: Jazz Hits Vol. 1 marked a great leap in his national and international visibility as a player and producer.

    Corey has authored or co-authored over 70 method books and projects for Mel Bay Publications. He has written many articles for many of the major guitar magazines in North America and Downbeat Magazine. He has developed The Modern Guitar Community, an online guitar-learning site. He currently is the music head at Education Advantage (an online accredited high school) and on the board of advisors for musiclessons.com. Corey currently teaches at Utah State University and has taught as an adjunct professor at the famed Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University (2008-2013), BYU-Idaho, and is an outreach educator for Caleb Chapman Music. He is also an artist-in-residence at Atlanta Institute of Music (Atlanta, GA), and Broadway Music School (Denver, CO)

  • Diane Soelberg

    Diane Soelberg is the Director of Bands, and conductor of the Symphony Band and teaches the oboe studio at Brigham Young University-Idaho. She currently serves as an Associate Dean in the College of Performing and Visual Arts, and was the Chair of the Department of Music from 2013 through 2017. Other teaching assignments have included music theory and ear training, instrumental conducting, chamber ensemble coaching and music education courses. Under her direction, the BYU-Idaho Symphony Band has performed throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico. The band has performed at the Idaho Music Educators Association (IMEA) State Conference, National Association for Music Education (NAfME) All-Northwest Conference, and at the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA) Western/Northwestern Division Conference.

    Miss Soelberg received a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Utah. She also received a Bachelor of Science in Music Therapy from Utah State University, and a Master of Music Education with an Emphasis in Conducting from Brigham Young University. Prior to her appointment at BYU-Idaho in 2003, she taught high school band and orchestra for fourteen years in the Weber County and Alpine School Districts in Utah. She received the “Rookie of the Year” award from the Utah Music Educators Association, the “Accent on Excellence” award from the Alpine School District, and the “Distinguished Faculty” award from BYU-Idaho.

  • Sonja Reynolds

    Author of the Structured Studio, a structured curriculum and guide to teaching private french horn lessons, Sonja Reynolds has twenty seven years of horn teaching experience, including nine years at The Music School and over twenty years with the American Fork band programs. She is best known for running a successful studio of forty private students, student teachers, and "grandstudents" (waiting list). She marched with the Blue Knights Drum and Bugle Corps and completed a horn performance degree at Brigham Young University. Sonja has studied under such well-known instructors as Dr. Ellen Powley, Dr. Randy Faust, Laurence Lowe and Ronald Beitel.

    Sonja is in demand as an instructor, freelance artist, clinician, and adjudicator throughout Utah and the Mountain West. She has presented at four International Horn Symposiums, multiple universities, and has provided many clinics throughout the country.

    Currently serving as the Executive Director and Artist in Residence for AlpenSong, she is also member of the Utah Premiere Brass (President; solo tenor horn, 12 years; manager, 10 years), a member of the Orchestra at Temple Square, and an active freelance artist in the Salt Lake area.

  • Dr. Kirt Saville

    Kirt Saville is currently Professor of Music Education and the Associate Director of Bands at Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah. Coming from 22 years of experience as the Director of Bands and 15 years as the music department chairman at Washburn University, Topeka, Kansas; Dr. Saville teaches instrumental music education and conducts the Symphonic Band at BYU. Dr. Saville holds a Doctor of Education from Utah State University, a Master of Music in Woodwind Performance from North Texas State University in multiple woodwinds (flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bassoon), and a Bachelors Degree in Music Education from Brigham Young University.

    Dr. Saville has a keen interest in conducting, rehearsal techniques, and the continued development of wind band literature. He has studied conducting with Eugene Corporon, Mallory Thompson, Frederick Fennell, Larry Rachlef, Allan McMurray, Glenn Price, and Clark Rundell. During his tenure at Washburn University the WU Symphonic Band was invited three times to perform for the College Band Directors National Association Southwestern Conference, and was invited in each year of eligibility to perform for the Kansas Music Educators Association In-Service Workshop in Wichita, KS. Dr. Saville is a respected conductor, clinician and adjudicator throughout the West and Mid-West.

  • Dr. Madeline LeBaron

    Madeline LeBaron Johnson teaches clarinet and music theory at Snow College, where she is music facilities coordinator and assistant professor of music. She recently completed her DMA at the University of North Texas. She also holds a Master of Music from Arizona State and a Bachelor of Music from Brigham Young University. Her principal teachers are James Gillespie, Robert Spring, and David Randall. Dr. Johnson has held prior teaching positions at Utah Valley State College and Brigham Young University. She performed at ClarinetFest 2003 in Salt Lake City. Her article on British clarinetist Nicholas Bucknall was published in The Clarinet in June 2001. Dr. Johnson has appeared as a soloist with orchestras and bands in the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. She currently performs as a member of the Orchestra at Temple Square in Salt Lake City and gives frequent masterclasses and recitals.
